Abi and Andrew discussed emotional self-regulation, defining it as understanding and managing emotions and behaviours, a key aspect of emotional intelligence.

They emphasied its importance for success in life, noting benefits like adaptability, mood management, stress management, better decisions, increased motivation, and improved relationships.

They clarified that self-regulation isn’t suppressing emotions but working with them for desired outcomes. In education, they highlighted its importance for teachers and children, as a teacher’s mood impacts students.

They distinguished self-regulation (managing emotions) from self-control (suppressing them), stressing it’s a learned skill needing continuous practice. Finally, they discussed self-awareness’ role in emotional regulation, emphasising recognising and understanding emotions, making conscious choices in responses, and considering consequences.

They suggested practicing self-awareness and emotional regulation, acknowledging it takes time but becomes natural, and stressed understanding past reactions instead of self-blame.
